Spice Plantation in Goa

The spice plantations in Goa are situated in the Ponda region and are quite popular as a major tourist attraction. The plantations use organic methods of cultivation and farming and are known to produce many of Goa's fantastic aromatic spices. At the spice plantations in Goa one can explore the fields and the farms. A guide is known to explain about all the spices and plants also tell about their medicinal properties. One can also see men climbing Betel Nut trees which are very tall and how they maintain a balance whilst plucking betel nut fruits from those swaying trees.

The spice plantations are known to be managed by people who excel in the technical know how of farming spices and who have comprehensive knowledge. Black pepper, cardamom, nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, chillies, coriander, betel nut palm are some of the spices one will find at the plantation. Tropical fruits such as Custard apples, Papaya, Bananas, Pineapples, Citrus fruits etc are also grown here.

Apart from the spices and the tropical fruits at the plantations one can also get to see a variety of species of birds that have been sighted within the plantation. These include cuckoos, koel, cousals, owls, maina, horn bills, pittas, parrots, large eagles and many more.

Savoi Spice Plantation :

This spice plantation is located at a distance of around 10 kilometers from Ponda. The main spices grown here are cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, turmeric, ginger, basil, nutmeg and pepper plantations. The cashew distillation unit is an added attraction here. Savoi Plantation has a very rustic decor. Take a guided tour of the cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, turmeric, ginger, basil, nutmeg and pepper plantations and the cashew distillation unit. Return to a buffet of Goan Saraswat cuisine at Savoi Plantation's Sadafuli Restaurant. Starters like fried mussels bring on a buffet lunch of bread, rice, prawn and vegetable curries, chicken xacuti, fried fish, stuffed crabs, kismur, pickle, sol kadi, yoghurt and fresh fruit. One can also stay in the farmhouse here.

Savoi Verem is off NH4A, 13 km down NH4A from Old Goa, Turn left at Banastarim to Marcela, from where the farm is 6 km away.

Tropical Spice Plantation :

Tropical Spice Plantation also has cashew and areca plantations, apart from spices and medicinal plants like aloe vera and neem. After a guided tour, go boating on the lake if you're here between October and April. Here too you can relish authentic Goan cuisine. Lemon grass tea, beer and feni are on offer to wash down the fish and chicken curries. But the speciality of the chef here is mixed veg kurma.

Abyss :

At Abyss, also in Savoi Vernem, an Ayurvedic doctor takes you on a tour of the medicinal plants, fruit and betelnut gardens. They also offer Ayurvedic massage here. Chef prepares a veg lunch every day, but you can call ahead and request fish or non-veg. Banana halwa and gulab jamun are excellent. This spice plantation is located on high mountains amidst stunning surroundings near Ponda. Many tourists visit the Abyss spice plantation as it is famous for the medicinal herbs that are grown over here on a large scale.

Sahakari Spice Farm :

Located at a distance of just 2 kilometers from Ponda, the Sahakari spice plantation is famous for its farms and grows many fruits. One of the most unique spices grown here is vanilla. The farm is spread over 130 acres and also has two small streams flowing right through. Sahakari Spice Farm is situated amidst lush green surroundings at Curti. The taluka of Ponda in which it is located, is extremely popular amongst tourists for its rich cultural heritage and magnificently designed places of worship.
